Musicians from Mexican sister city bring friendship through music to SPS schools

Five man sing into microphone in a line. Each plays an instrument: bongos, maracas, two guitars and a bass guitar.

Musical group Tierra Mojada and famed singer Paco Padilla traveled from Springfield sister city Tlaquepaque, Mexico to perform for students in partnership with Springfield Sister Cities Association (SSCA).

The musicians played a mix of traditional Mexican music and other songs and introduced students to each instrument. Their performance was meant to spread “friendship between cultures” with the theme Amigos by the Magic of Music.

“One of the most important parts of having sister cities is the peace,” Padilla said during the performance at Central High School. “The peace in your own soul and then the peace to give to others.”

The band was especially moved when students at Central asked to come up on stage after the performance to meet the musicians. They all remarked on how impressed they were by the students' interest and appreciation, saying they had never gotten that kind of response before.

A man in a colorful vest and a hat signs a piece of paper for a girl in a black hoodie as she looks on.

These performances were a prime example of how SSCA and Springfield Public Schools align in their efforts to further Springfield’s understanding of other cultures through meaningful interactions and high-quality learning experiences.
